A person's house is his castle and he takes exception to uninvited guests, especially those that bring with them the threat of disease, such as flies, cockroaches, termites, mice, rats, and squirrels. These are just some of the animals that can gain entry into our homes on a temporary basis, or even set up their own homes inside ours. It is not surprising that pest control has become big business, although there is a lot you can do yourself to deal with this problem.
Rats can be especially troublesome as they can cause noise disturbance at night if they get into the loft space. They can also cause serious damage by gnawing wiring, interrupting lighting circuits or even causing a fire if insulation is sufficiently destroyed.
It has been recently estimated that there are about 60 million rats in the UK which is one for every member of the population. Their numbers have soared due to milder winters and the general increase in food litter on our streets from take away restaurants and their customers. In the home they will eat food put out for birds or pet rabbits, and in the loft they will chew at paper, cardboard, leather, rubber, canvas or material of any type and can devastate any stored possessions of that nature.
